The Walrus; A Graceful Swimmer

Larissa Vasquez

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

The walrus is a graceful and powerful arctic creature that wields long tusks. Many people also called the walrus a Morse.

There are 2 different types of walrus, the first one is called the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus)and the Pacific walrus (O. rosmarus divergens). The walrus has a plump, round body; the walrus has long white whiskers called vibrissae. A male walrus is much bigger than the female walrus; the male walrus can weigh 3,700 pounds and 12 feet.

Both the female and male walrus have large tusks which are their canine teeth they usually grow downward. They use their large tusk as a way to show off during mating season and a way to defend themselves from other walrus.

The walrus use their vibrissae to find prey on the ocean floor; they typically eat clams and mussels but occasionally include fish and even small seals. You can often see the walrus in a group , a group of walrus is called a herd. These animals aren’t endangered.
