The Sinking of the Titanic; a famous tragedy

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

The Titanic was an expensive and high class steamship for the rich and lower class. The Titanic was made because of harsh competition in the shipping lines during that time. For example, one of the titanic's competitors was the Cunard’s Mauretania during that time it was considered the fastest boat in the world and it held that record for 22 years. The average speed for the Cunard’s Mauretania was 27.26 mph. Another competitor of the Titanic was the Lusitania, but it was destroyed during WW1 by the German army.

On May 31, 1911, the Titanic was set to depart. Almost 100,000 people attended the departure. On April 15, 1912 near the coast of Newfoundland, the Titanic sank to the bottom of the ocean after hitting a large iceberg. On the ship, there were around 2000 people on board-- only half of them survived. The rest of the passengers died in the icy Atlantic.

There were many wealthy and well known people on the ship like John Jacob Astor IV, heir to the Astor family fortune, who had made waves a year earlier by marrying 18-year-old Madeleine Talmadge Force.
