What is a Starfish?
Starfish, also known as Asteroidea, are invertebrates. They are not reptiles, mammals, or even amphibians!
What do Starfish eat?
Starfish are carnivores. However, that doesn't mean they are picky eaters. They also eat mollusks, clams, mussels, oysters, hermit crabs, sea snails, sea urchins, and slow-moving fish. They pry open these animals with their suction-cupped feet. One Sea Star can eat 50+ clams in a week!
Mollusks are the easiest for them to find and eat because they are slow-moving, attaching to rocks and other surfaces. The Starfish’s mouth is on the underside of its body.

How do Starfish Behave?
Starfish have red spots at the end of their arms, allowing them to detect objects. Furthermore, they can detect shades of light intensity. If you were to move your hand around the red spot, they will be able to detect that the light intensity has dropped, and that something was moving.
Starfish can also regenerate limbs. Starfish let go of their arms intentionally when temperatures are too high.

Characteristics of Starfish
Starfish grow up to 4.7-9.4 inches in length and weigh up to 11 pounds. The starfish lives up to 35 years. When you think of a Starfish, you think of them having 5 arms. However, they can grow up to 50 LIMBS! Starfish are covered in pincer-like organs that allow them to move across the ocean. There are 2,000 species of sea stars in the world's oceans today!

Offspring
Starfish offspring are very small and hardly visible to the naked eye. These tiny Starfish feed on minuscule plants and animals floating nearby. Over the next six months, offspring become more visible to predators as they grow. They begin to make their homes under reef rocks and rubble. A starfish is considered an adult around 2 years old.
