17 Facts you Never Knew About Octopi

You probably already knew that "octopi" is the plural for octopus, but did you know that other plural names for octopuses are "octopuses" and "octopods"? Now, you can choose your favorite and keep that name in mind while you explore these octopus facts.


  1. Octopi are known as cephalopods and some cephalopods are known to be able to release a pseudomorph, a mirror image of that cephalopod made from ink when needed to escape predators. This ink replica distracts and irritates the predator so the cephalopods can escape.

  2. Octopi are also classified as invertebrates. Octopi are the only known invertebrates that are aware. This means that they have cognitive thinking skills, different emotions, and even personalities. They are also known to form relationships with humans.

  3. Octopi are the most intelligent invertebrates on Earth. For example, octopi are known to open childproof bottles and distinguish humans from each other.

  4. Octopi have three hearts!

  5. Most octopi have eight arms, each with 240 little suckers on each arm, for a grand total of 1,920 suckers!

  6. Similar to a starfish, octopi can grow back a tentacle if it becomes detached.

  7. Unlike humans, octopi bleed blue blood instead of red, because there is more copper in their blood than iron.

  8. An octopus eats a very nutritious diet, consisting of 139 calories, about 2 grams of fat, and 25 grams of protein per 3-ounce servings.

  9. Octopi cannot see colors, they are color blind.

  10. Octopi have a neurotoxin to stun and kill their prey. Thankfully, most of octopi's toxins aren't able to kill a human.

  11. A well-known fact is that octopi are able to change their skin color and texture to match perfectly with their surroundings, in approximately 0.3 seconds!

  12. Octopi also like decorating their homes. They love placing little trinkets around their homes.

  13. "Octopus arms have minds of their own. Two-thirds of an octopus' neurons are in its arms. Even after they're severed, the arms will search for food and bring it back to a non-existent mouth." (OAH).

  14. Every single octopus has a venom-like substance in its mouth because of bacteria. Most of the "venom" is harmless to humans.

  15. A female octopus is called a hen and can lay up to 400,000 eggs at once!

  16. Octopi are known to use coconuts as armor. When they feel threatened, they slip into one half of the coconut and pull the other half on top of them.

  17. Sometimes a male octopus will get too excited and try to mate with a female too many times, to a point where the female octopus will strangle him and take him to her den to feast on him over the next few days.
